> Annual “Case for Inclusion” Report Released
> Today, United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) released its annual “Case for Inclusion” report. The report ranks 50 states and the District of Columbia on how well state Medicaid programs serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This year’s report shows that just 8 states, down from 10 last year, have at least one-third (33 percent) of individuals with ID/DD working in competitive employment— showing significant opportunity for improvement in employing people with disabilities, and that 14 states report successfully placing at least 60 percent of individuals in vocational rehabilitation in jobs. Only California met the standard on all three success measures this year. Along with the report, UCP has also updated its interactive website that aims to give viewers the ability to compare and contrast how their state ranks in providing key services to individuals with disabilities. View the report and learn more about the “Case for Inclusion.”

> Senate Continues Floor Debate on Every Child Achieves Act
> The Senate has continued its floor debate on the bipartisan bill, The Every Child Achieves Act (ECAA) this week. Today, it is expected that the chamber will take a series of votes on nearly 20 amendments to the bill and later will take a final passage vote on the measure after invoking cloture yesterday. The Senate compromise bill would require states to set guidelines for rating schools that would include other metrics like graduation rates, English proficiency, results of parent and student satisfaction surveys and disciplinary records or assessments of working conditions for teachers. Read on from Politico. Or, learn more about the Senate bill, titled “The Every Child Achieves Act.”

> Obama Administration Denies Flexibility to New York State in Testing Students with Disabilities
> Yesterday, the Obama administration denied the state of New York’s request to gain more flexibility from federal law to test students with disabilities, for those with “significant intellectual delays and substantial difficulties in cognitive areas such as memory, language comprehension, reasoning and problem-solving” — based on their developmental level and not, as required, on their age. Learn more about what this means for students with disabilities and their teachers from The Washington Post.

> Senators Call on Disability Advocates to Provide Ideas to Strengthen Social Security Disability Insurance Program
> Last week, House Ways and Means Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI), Social Security Subcommittee Chairman Sam Johnson (R-TX), and Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-UT) called on disability advocates and other interested stakeholders to bring ideas to the table on how best to address the impending depletion of reserves in the Social Security’s Disability Insurance (DI) Trust Fund. The lawmakers are specifically seeking input on the following: (1) ways to make the DI program work better for current and future beneficiaries; (2) ways to improve the financial outlook for the DI Trust Fund; and (3) ways to promote opportunities for those trying to return to work. All submissions must be submitted by September 1, 2015. For more information, and to review submission requirements, visit the Senate Finance Committee website.
