Greetings Federation Family,

The Tampa Chapter celebrated this year’s White Cane Day by crossing an
intersection of 36 lanes, and a spirit night a one of our stomping
grounds here in Tampa.

The first event of the day was a walk along one of our largest and
busiest intersections in Tampa. Dale Mabry Highway and Waters Avenue
is a 36 lane intersection where several traffic violations are made
daily. The Tampa chapter crossed this intersection several times
between 1 PM and 3 PM on October 15th. The chapter had the support of
the Hillsborough County Sheriff deputies where several drivers were
notified that they were breaking the law by being pulled over. Also,
the chapter was supported by student volunteers from Hillsborough
Community College and the local media. This walk brought community
awareness on the white cane law and showed that the national
Federation of the Blind is alive in Tampa.

The second part of the day was held at our monthly stomping ground at
Beef O Brady’s. Here we passed out literature about the NFB to several
individuals. The chapter will receive 10% off the total of each bill
between 4 PM and 11 PM. Also, Beef O Brady’s generously donated gift
cards for us to raffle off during the event.

Overall, both events were highly successful. The chapter was able to
educate the student volunteers, as well as the community. Below is a
link from the Tampa Bay Times where several chapter members were
interviewed.
