Get ready for summer with Be My Eyesthis is a great app. I use it all the
time. I assume it is available for Android, but correct me if I'm wrong.

Bringing Sight to the Blind and Visually Impaired
Get ready for summer with Be My Eyes
Summer is finally here - a time to relax and travel.
But for some, along with the sun may come some nervous butterflies.
It’s finally June, and before you know it, you may
find yourself in the blazing sun, in soft sand or on vacation in unfamiliar
surroundings. The purpose of the holiday is to relax, and with Be My Eyes,
you truly can. You can feel secure and even more independent knowing that
you are never really alone as you tackle new activities and places. In your
pocket, more than 500,000 volunteers are waiting to assist you whenever you
need them.
A Be My Eyes volunteer can help you find the right
street name, describe the color of a painting or read you a menu containing
some unfamiliar cuisine.
Once you try it, you will never leave home, the
state, or the country without it.
Hotels can be a challenge
Hotel rooms can pose particular challenges for those
of us with visual impairments. Gayle Yarnall is blind and the former
director of adaptive technology at Perkins Products, so she used to travel
for work often. Before Be My Eyes, it came with some uneasy anticipation.
“I normally always read about a place before going
there. There are many cultural differences to be aware of. Like in Japan you
will find that a toilet has eight buttons. So it’s just a matter of trial
and error before hitting the right one,” says Gayle.
So traveling is not always easy – and it may even
mess up your hair. Gayle used to hate the fact that most hotels have three
identical bottles of shampoo, lotion, and conditioner. They are exactly
alike, and equally floral-smelling. “But trust me,” she says. “You can taste
the difference.”
With Be My Eyes as her closest travel companion,
Gayle can send her taste buds on vacation - or at least give them a rest.
“I tried Be My Eyes for the first time to describe
the label on a bottle of wine. And the volunteer, Shawn, described the whole
label for me. I loved it. A whole new world has opened for me, and I will
bring it everywhere.”
Make sure to spread the word and download Be My Eyes
before traveling. Happy holidays.
