Dear Seeing Eye graduates:

Last week, Delta announced changes to its policy concerning service and emotional support animals. Given the changes Delta made to its policy in March, and the controversy surrounding those changes, we thought it would be helpful to provide some clarification on the most recent amendments.

The new changes are not directed at guide dog handlers and therefore should not affect us. On flights booked December 18 or later, Delta is banning service and emotional support animals under four months old and emotional support animals on flights lasting eight hours or longer. As of February 1, 2019, these restrictions apply regardless of when the flight was booked.

That said, we know that unfortunately, guide dog handlers can experience negative consequences when airline policies are not applied correctly. Remember that if you believe an airline is discriminating against you because you are working with a guide dog, you can ask to speak to a Complaints Resolution Official (CRO). We wish everyone smooth travels during this holiday season and into the new year.

Below is a link to Delta’s service and support animal policy and an excerpt outlining the changes:

When flying on Delta, we welcome service and support animals in the aircraft cabin. When traveling with a service or support animal, we’re here to work with you to make sure your travel day runs smoothly.

Please be advised that our service and support animal policy is changing:

1.	Effective July 10, 2018: Each customer is limited to one emotional support animal. We are no longer accepting pit bull type dogs as service or support animals.
2.	Effective December 18, 2018: Service and support animals under four months of age are not allowed on any flight due to rabies vaccination requirements.

Additionally, emotional support animals are no longer allowed to be booked on flights longer than eight hours. If you purchased your ticket prior to December 18th and have requested to travel with an emotional support animal, it will be ok to travel as originally ticketed.

3.	Effective February 1, 2019: Emotional support animals will not be accepted on flights longer than eight hours after regardless of booking date.
