TREASURE COAST NEWSLETTER, VOLUME II, APRIL 2018

Welcome to the April, 2018 newsletter of the Treasure Coast Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind

CHAPTER NEWS

Our March meeting of the Treasure Coast Chapter of the NFB was another great success. Our guest speaker was Bobby Davis from the Division of Blind Services. She explained the services provided and how to contact her if any assistance is needed. Chapter T-shirts were ordered by our members. There were four new members signing up. Our chapter is growing! Information from each of our members was gathered. If you have not sent in your membership dues and membership form, please contact Mary Hannah-Morris. At the end of the meeting we broke into smaller groups so that members could discuss individual concerns. We are always excited to discuss new finds that can assist all of us in our daily living. We had a wonderful fundraising event in Chili’s restaurant and are looking forward to more fundraising to come.

A LOOK AT OUR MEMBERS

MY name is Mary Hannah-Morris. My husband Alan and I moved to Port St. Lucie 8 years ago from Philadelphia. I have 3 daughters, 10 grandchildren and 2 great grand-sons. I have no vision in my left eye and very little in my right eye due to glaucoma and retina detachment in January 2013. Then in 2014 I started taking art/paint lessons. I have sold a few, some are hanging in my home, in family and friends homes as well. There is also one hanging at Retina Care Specialists in PGA. I want to take this opportunity to thank The Lighthouse for the blind of The Palm Beaches and the NFB, for helping me to live the life I want. Mary Hannah-Morris

IMPORTANT PHONE NUMBERS

Newsline is a wonderful service provided for us. You can dial 561-860-8011 and listen to newspapers and other topics of interest. If you have not signed up for the service call: 386-738-102 and speak to Wendy. She will give you a code to use after dialing the Newsline number.

Great Websitehttp://Blindbargins.com

– You can sign up for daily emails from this source. Each day they will provide you with special sales available specifically designed for the visually impaired. They will also advertise special sales for products you may wish to purchase. There are links to podcasts that provide very interesting information. Give it a try!

HOBBIES AND CRAFTS

Some of you may have been knitting before you were visually impaired. Try it again! Start with a simple Project. Maybe begin with a knitted scarf. Cast on about 20 stitches and knit every line. You can use any size needle or type of yarn. Make it as long as you’d like

You will begin to find it easier as you go. Your fingers will do the work, feeling the stitches as you go. ENJOY!

For those of you looking for another easy recipe, you can make a pumpkin cake by mixing either a spice or carrot cake and a can of pure pumpkin. If the mixture is too thick add some unsweetened applesauce. Mix thoroughly and bake in two greased loaf pans at 350 degrees for about 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

MESSAGE FOR THE MONTH

Take it slow. Set your goals. Speak to your teachers and design a course of learning that will make you feel successful. One step at a time. YOU can do anything. A positive attitude will make anything possible.

MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR

The newsletter was posted on our website in Facebook and copies were distributed at the meeting. We may be able to email copies with each reminder of the monthly meetings. What do you think?

We still do not have a name for the newsletter. Please call or email me with suggestions. I also would like suggestions of items you would like to see in your newsletter. It’s success is up to you. See you next month.

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you
or your future. Every day we raise the expectations of blind people, because low expectations
create obstacles between blind people and our dreams.
You can live the life you want; blindness is not what holds you back.
