June 22nd was the 20th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark Olmstead decision! Before 1999, people with disabilities could be institutionalized and kept segregated and isolated from society, limiting their access to jobs, education, and more. In the case Olmstead vs. Lois Curtis and Elaine Wilson, the Court held that people with disabilities have the civil right to choose state-funded services in the community in the least restrictive setting possible, rather than in institutions. This video celebrates the decision’s legacy, how far we have come, the tireless efforts of the activists who fought before us, and the work still left to accomplish.

Although originally thought to be a necessary part of classroom behavior management, these practices are understood to be dangerous, jeopardizing the health and safety of students with disabilities.

For some people with disabilities, community-based resources are vital to their care. Clara Eads is no exception. After having a stroke, she spent time in a nursing facility to recover. Once recovered, she wished to return to her home, but was denied by her insurance. Disability Rights Florida provided legal representation for Clara at an administrative hearing contesting the insurance company’s denial of in-home services. The decision was in favor of Clara returning home and receiving substantial in-home services and around the clock care.  

Today, Clara is happily living in the comfort of her own home. Clara’s daughter shares that her mother, "has already got a lot of her spark back."
