Healio: Education Campaign Promotes Vision Screening For Vulnerable Youth
<https://www.healio.com/news/optometry/20200825/education-campaign-promotes-
vision-screening-for-vulnerable-youth>

The goal of the recently launched All Children's Health Initiative for Eye
and Vision Excellence is to promote awareness among low-income and racial or
ethnic minority households whose children are disproportionately more likely
to have an undiagnosed vision disorder. "Without early detection and
treatment, uncorrected vision disorders can impair child development,
interfere with learning and even lead to permanent vision loss," Prevent
Blindness said in a press release. The campaign - a joint effort between
Prevent Blindness and the National Optometric Association (NOA) - launched
this month to mark Children's Eye Health and Safety Month. The HHS
recognizes Children's Eye Health and Safety Month as a national health
observance.

A Kmart fan has taken to Facebook to share a touching post about her son and
some inclusive toys she found at her store. Emma Evert took to the Kmart
Mums Australia Facebook group and shared photos of her son Harlen with a
doll that is vision impaired, just like him. She wrote, "Kmart absolutely
killing it with the new range of inclusive dolls. It is so important that
kids with disabilities are represented in TV, books and toys. "It's equally
important [their] typical developing peers have exposure to these things."

HEALTHY LIVING: A Glimpse Into Aging Eyes

As we get older, many of us will experience loss of vision to varying
degrees. But for some, vision loss can interfere with the activities they
enjoy, such as reading or other hobbies. Read on to learn more about vision
loss and ways you can cope with these changes. What it means to lose vision.
When a person is suffering from blindness, it doesn't necessarily mean
complete blindness--the total loss of sight and light to the eye. It can
mean that part of your vision is impaired, such as peripheral vision or
focus, and some vision impairments do not lead to complete loss of sight.

Accessibility And How Kindle Makes Reading Accessible To Everyone

The impact its devices have on people with disabilities is not lost on
Amazon. For them, delivering quality assistive technologies is part and
parcel of being "customer obsessed." This sentiment was shared by Director
of Amazon Devices Accessibility at Lab126, Peter Korn, in a recent interview
about Fire TV's new Text Banner functionality. "When we build a product, we
start with the customer in mind and work backwards to earn and keep their
trust," he said to me. "Our philosophy on accessibility is no different."

Since March, when the coronavirus pandemic placed limits on public life, Ms.
Sotnikova has had many more chances to join in: House parties, professional
conferences, activist meetings and improv classes, often held in spaces that
she cannot fully access, have suddenly opened to her through her screen. "At
some point, nondisabled people had decided that such things were
unimaginable," said Aimi Hamraie, a disabled scholar who directs the
Critical Design Lab at Vanderbilt University, which takes a
multidisciplinary approach to designing for accessibility. "And then
overnight they became imaginable by necessity."

A healthy lifestyle often helps protect people from the risk of diseases
such as diabetes, cardiovascular illnesses, and high blood sugar. Scientists
have recently linked cardiovascular health to eye health, particularly
diabetic retinopathy. The new paper has been published in Elsevier's
American Journal of Medicine. The team suggests that preventing
cardiovascular diseases can also help lower the risk of ocular disease.
