Nursing facilities frequently attempt to force a facility resident's family
members or friends to become responsible for the resident's bills. This
generally happens after a family member or friend signs an admission
agreement in haste and under stress on behalf of a resident who is unable to
sign themselves. Such collection attempts are almost always illegal. Despite
what a facility might say when attempting to collect, signing an admission
agreement for another person does not make the signer financially liable for
the resident's stay in most cases.
