Greetings Federationists:

Call for Resolutions

The National Federation of the Blind of Florida is sending out a call for Resolutions to be heard and voted upon by the membership at our 2024 State Convention in October. The deadline to submit resolutions to the Resolutions Committee is Friday, September 6, 2024. The committee will not accept resolutions for consideration by the committee beyond this date. Resolutions must be submitted in proper resolutions format and sent to Resolutions at NFBFlorida.org by the published deadline. There are some FAQ’s below on resolutions and the process.

•	What is a resolution? A resolution is a policy statement of the organization, whether it is passed at National Convention or a State Convention.
•	Who writes resolutions? Resolutions are written by members of the National Federation of the Blind or the state affiliate a member belongs to. Only members of the National Federation of the Blind can submit or defend a resolution on the floor of the convention.
•	How is a resolution passed? A resolution is passed by a majority vote of the convention body assembled at a National or State Convention. There are two readings of each resolution. At the first reading, the general membership and Resolutions Committee (appointed by the Board of Directors) will hear the resolution and a “defense” of the resolution by the author or a person the author has asked to defend the resolution. At this first reading, no comments are taken from the membership or audience. The committee will vote to pass or do not pass the resolution to be read on the convention floor during a business session. The resolution is read a second time during a business session of the convention, at which time, any member in good standing may make comment either in support or against the resolution. Once discussion comes to a close, the convention body will vote to adopt or not adopt the resolution. Please note: only members of the National Federation of the Blind may speak or vote on any resolution presented to the convention body.
•	Can I serve on the Resolutions Committee? The Resolutions Committee is a closed committee. What that means is that while any member in good standing may serve on the committee, it is the right of the President to appoint the chair of the committee and Board of Directors to approve any members to serve on the committee.
•	How can I write a resolution? Any member in good standing may write a resolution for consideration by the committee. The committee requires a resolution be submitted in proper resolutions format. However, the committee may assist with the writing process. It is strongly suggested those wishing to write and submit a resolution review previous resolutions that have passed the convention. If someone still needs assistance writing a resolution or has an idea for one, but unsure of what the next step is, email the committee at Resolutions at NFBFlorida.org.
•	What if I miss the submission deadline? The committee sets a firm deadline for submissions because the committee needs time to review the resolution. The committee will not accept resolutions beyond the published deadline. However, there is a procedure in place for resolutions to be brought directly to the floor for vote. Please contact the Resolutions Committee Chair if you have missed the submission deadline. Note: Any resolutions that bypass the committee process must already be in resolutions format; the committee will not work to put it in proper format.

Together,
Camille Tate, First Vice President
