Good afternoon, everyone!

 

Please make time within your busy schedules to attend our first post Washington/Tallahassee Seminars meeting for the year. Despite the fact that we aren’t even through with the month of February, we already have a tremendous amount to discuss. I hadn’t actually imagined that we would be this busy, this early, but the truth is, we are, and we need to be.

 

The other day, someone asked me, “just who is part of Florida’s Legislative Committee”? I answered quickly, “in Florida, we are all involved in advocacy and education efforts, it’s not just a small select group of people”. I’m very proud that I could honestly give that answer and am extremely proud of our affiliate.

 

In the meeting scheduled for this coming Tuesday, February 25th at 8:00 PM (Eastern), we will be discussing our recent trips to both Washington DC and Tallahassee. We will review the status of our Legislative priorities, including the Blind Americans return to work Act, which was recently introduced in the US House of Representative’s as HR-1175.

 

Section 504 has been an extremely active point of discussion for many of us lately. For us to discuss the issues surrounding this section of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 intelligently, we need to understand clearly the facts behind the ongoing Federal litigation, (including Florida’s involvement in the Federal lawsuit). Without understanding precisely what is happening, we can’t effectively work together to defend the rights contained in this vital piece of civil rights legislation.

 

So, the meeting Tuesday evening will probably be fast paced, but we’ll get through the agenda topics and will work to make sure your valuable time is well spent.
