Laura reviewed important federal protections, including the Help America Vote Act (HAVA), which requires accessible voting equipment at polling locations, and the Voting Rights Act, which allows voters with disabilities to receive assistance from a person of their choice, with limited exceptions. She also discussed Florida's accessible vote-by-mail process, which currently allows voters to receive and complete ballots electronically using their own assistive technology before printing, signing, and returning them.</p><p><br></p><p>Laura also provided an overview of recent voting legislation that could affect voter registration and identification requirements in the future. While these changes are not expected to take effect before January 1, 2027, and remain subject to ongoing legal challenges, they may require certain new voters to provide documentary proof of citizenship when registering.
