Subject: [NFBF-L] time for another Sunrise and Shine... Thursday, May 27th @ 9:00 AM... Blind Folks on the Radio - Don't Miss Our Special Guest Speakers

Hello out there in Radio Land!!!

I'm happy to see that Sunrise and Shine with NFB Newsline is settling into its new schedule for 2021 and that fans of the popular Zoom call can plan their schedules accordingly. We are now gathering on the second and fourth Thursday's of each month beginning at 9:00 AM. This means of course that Rise and Shine will be happening Thursday, May 27th, (and for those planning ahead, again on June 10th).

We hope you will be able to join us for our exploration of NFB Newsline and other related topics. Our discussions about Newsline don't take up all of the time we spend together though, there is always time for welcoming new participants and for lots of laughter.

On our last call we agreed to broaden the focus of the regularly held calls to include more non NFB Newsline topics and more guest speakers. I’m constantly looking for great topic ideas and would welcome your input. Our calls are only successful if we make it a group effort.

Speaking of terrific guest speakers and fantastic topics, I am confident that this Thursdays call is going to check all the boxes. I have been a big radio buff for as long as I can remember, as a little kid I use to stay up late into the night tuning across the dial of my AM/Shortwave receiver listening to voices from far-away places with strange sounding names, never imagining how things would change as time went on. Now we can find radio stations simply by clicking an app on our smart phones or by asking our smart speakers to play a particular station or music genre. Now too, it’s easier than ever to sit behind a microphone and fulfill your own dream of becoming a broadcaster. Radio stations have been popping up on the internet in droves over the past couple of decades and many of them are staffed by blind folks just like us. Of course, listening to online radio isn’t just about DJ’s, it’s about listeners too. Almost any type of music or talk content is available for you to discover. On Thursday we will have the opportunity to meet Alicia Eidson, a blind woman from Florida who, last year, launched her own internet radio station, Ocean Waves Radio. Most of her staff are blind and all host fun and entertaining shows. One of our Sun Rise and Shine family members, Pam from New York, has been involved with online internet radio for several years and has her own show on Ocean Waves. We hope very much that you can find the time to join us on Thursday and hear about why Alicia started her own station and what drives her to staff it with other blind people like herself. Many other station options run by blind DJ’s are out there ready for us to discover too and so we’ll talk about some of those as well.

Most of us have become pretty familiar with attending meetings using the Zoom platform over the past year and in fact, we’ve been using Zoom since we launched Rise and Shine last year. If you’re not used to using Zoom or if it’s still giving you difficulties, don’t give up just yet. You can access the meeting by clicking on he below listed web link, by using the one tap mobile feature or by dialing the phone number provided and entering the access code when prompted.

The regulars on our call are always warm and welcoming and are thrilled to see new faces.

Hope to have you with us Thursday morning, see below for the Zoom info. The first person caught snoozing on the call has to pay for the party bus heading to the beach, (so stay alert Peggy).

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me before the call at our NFB Newsline of Florida toll-free support line. Check the bottom of this email for the Zoom call-in instructions.
