Good Morning!
This past week, the nation was shaken by the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
An American hero, Cory Comperatore, attending the rally lost his life as he heroically shielded his family from gunfire. Two other rally attendees are in stable condition as they recover from their injuries.
In times like these, it is crucial that we come together as a nation to support each other and uphold the values that bind our nation. Our thoughts and prayers go out to President Trump and his family as well as all of the victims affected by this senseless tragedy.
I consider it a great honor to represent District 19. Florida Ranked Top Economy for the 2nd Year
Last week, CNBC ranked Florida's economy one of the strongest in the nation for the 2nd consecutive year. This achievement is a testament to the state's rapid economic growth, which has been nearly double the national rate since 2019. This is largely driven by an influx of new residents and business growth.
Florida's broader economic health is reflected in its impressive statistics, a low unemployment rate of 2.6 %, a favorable corporate tax rate, and support for startups and small businesses. Governor DeSantis celebrated this achievement, highlighting the strategic actions taken in 2024 that contributed to Florida’s top ranking.
Governor Desantis stated, "In 2024, we reduced spending, cut taxes, raised teacher pay, paid down record amounts of state debt, generated a huge budget surplus, ranked #1 in education, allocated record funding for Everglades restoration, and accelerated road and highway projects." The Legislature and the Governor's efforts in supporting policies that promote economic growth and stability have been key to Florida's success.

Attorney General Moody & FDLE Announce Decline in Drug Related Deaths
Last week, Attorney General Moody and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) announced the 3rd consecutive report showing a decline in statewide drug-related deaths.
Attorney General Moody credited the decrease to the relentless efforts of Florida law enforcement in removing deadly drugs from the streets and providing more resources to those struggling with addiction. She emphasized the ongoing need to combat the opioid crisis on multiple fronts, including law enforcement, addiction treatment, and federal court battles to enforce stricter immigration policies to curb the flow of illicit drugs.
FDLE Commissioner Mark Glass echoed these sentiments, highlighting the collaborative efforts between state agents, local law enforcement, lawmakers, and communities in reducing drug-related deaths and enhancing public safety. The report noted a 7% decrease in total drug-related deaths, a 10% decrease in fentanyl-related deaths, and a 10% decrease in opioid-caused deaths. In addition to law enforcement efforts, Attorney General Moody has been actively involved in legal challenges to tighten border security and halt the influx of Fentanyl.

Florida Department of Elder Affairs
This week, we are highlighting the Florida Department of Elder Affairs (DOEA). Established in 1988 under Governor Lawton Chiles, the department's mission is to promote the well-being, safety, and independence of Florida's senior citizens.
With nearly 6.3 million residents aged 60 and older in Florida, the DOEA plays an important role in advocating for this growing demographic. It operates under the mandate of the Older Americans Act, overseeing critical services in partnership with 11 Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs), or Aging and Disability Resource Centers (ADRCs).
The department has a wide range of programs aimed at supporting seniors and their caregivers. Key among these is the Alzheimer's Disease Initiative (ADI), which provides caregiver training, respite care, and support through specialized clinics and innovative day care models. Another notable program is the Florida Alzheimer's Center of Excellence (FACE) which offers holistic care for those living with dementia.
DOEA also manages contracts for community-based services funded by federal and state resources such as the Older Americans Act (OAA). These services include Home Care for the Elderly (HCE), providing subsidies to caregivers supporting low-income elders at home, and the Emergency Home Energy Assistance for the Elderly Program (EHEAP), offering aid during home energy emergencies. Caregiver support programs are also provided by the DOEA, offering services like counseling and support groups to assist caregivers.
Nutrition programs, including home-delivered meals, nutrition education, and initiatives like the Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) and the Nutrition Services Incentive Program (NSIP), ensure seniors receive adequate nutrition.
In addition to these services, the department engages senior volunteers through community service programs. First Lady Casey DeSantis's Hope Florida initiative has senior volunteers, known as "Hope Heroes," to mentor individuals with unique needs across the state. These volunteers contribute to community service efforts through partnerships with programs like AmeriCorps and the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP).
Through these comprehensive programs and initiatives, the Florida Department of Elder Affairs continues to lead in elder care, ensuring all Floridians have the support they need to enjoy a high quality of life.

World's 2nd Largest Cruise Ship Docked at Port Canaveral
Last week, the world’s 2nd largest cruise ship, Royal Caribbean’s Utopia of the Seas, arrived at Port Canaveral.
The Utopia of the Seas is designed for short three and four night cruises and can host 5,668 passengers on its 18 decks. Passengers can enjoy 21 dining venues, 23 bars, 5 pools, 3 water slides, and 2 casinos.
Capt. John Murray, Port Canaveral CEO stated, "We are proud to be Royal Caribbean's partner for this industry first experience and excited to support the strong market demand for short itineraries. Our team is ready and committed to providing high-quality experiences to help all cruise guests launch their memorable journeys from our Port."
In order to keep up with the growing cruise industry, Port Canaveral recently announced plans to build a new cruise terminal. The new terminal, Cruise Terminal 7 (CT7), will be at the North 8 berth. This project will be completed in about two years and will give Port Canaveral more space for large cruise ships.
Port Canaveral’s CEO, Capt. John Murray, explained, “Our ability to efficiently bring a new cruise terminal online was key to retaining and growing this important business segment that supports many jobs and delivers high value to our regional and state economy.”
It will be built with minimal disruption to current port operations. Micah Loyd, Chairman of the Canaveral Port Authority Board of Commissioners, emphasized that this move supports the economic growth of our community and helps Florida maintain its status as the “Cruise Capital of the World.”
With the arrival of Utopia of the Seas and the expansion plans at Port Canaveral, the community is set for exciting growth in tourism and economic opportunities.

FWC & Hubbs Seaworld Research Rescue Baby Dolphin in IRL
Last week, the Hubbs SeaWorld Research Institute (HSWRI) and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission rescued a baby dolphin that was found entangled in a fishing line in the Indian River Lagoon.
The rescue team swiftly surrounded the dolphin with a net, enabling medical staff from Hubbs Research to safely cut the line and conduct a quick check-up. This collaborative effort highlights the ongoing work of the Hubbs SeaWorld Research Institute in Brevard County. They partner on studies aimed at understanding and preventing the underlying causes of marine mammal strandings.
Additionally, HSWRI scientists serve as first responders for marine mammals in both Brevard and Volusia counties, showing their role as leaders in marine species rescue, rehabilitation, and release efforts.
