Thanks Carlos for the message.i have been signed up to those you suggested. However, Kathy Castor is not everyone’s rep for Tampa so I encourage members to see who your rep is and stay connected with them as well.
For all who are interested the Legislative committee meets the third Tuesday of each month. We will be putting the information regarding date, time, and dial for n instructions very soon.
With warmest regards,
Merry

Greetings chapter members. As some of you may know, I believe that it is so important to stay connected to what is going on in Washington DC. To that end, upon moving to Tampa I signed up for Representative Kathy Caster's email list. She provides a weekly update on her schedule and on other issues that are important to the Tampa community. I would encourage all of you to sign up for her email list. I would also do this for the Senators at the State, and Federal levels.
Sincerely, Carlos Montas

Subject: 2018 Report: Federal Dollars for Tampa Bay
[Rep. Kathy Castor]
Dear friends,
As 2018 winds down and we look ahead to 2019, I want to thank you for the opportunity to represent you and the wonderful Tampa Bay community.
Everyday, my Tampa constituent services team, Tery Sanchez, Dee Gonzalez and Tania Fernandez (with help from all of Team Castor) work hard to cut through red tape to advocate for the benefits and services our neighbors have earned, including for veterans, Social Security and Medicare for seniors, people with disabilities and more. In 2018, we returned $2.6 million to veterans, seniors, small businesses and families across Tampa Bay and assisted with more than 2,900 cases.
More than half of the $2.6 million in federal benefits went to veterans/military and their families. With more than 98,000 veterans in Hillsborough County, the highest veteran population in Florida according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, every day we are focused on benefit adjustments, disability claims and appeals, debt waivers, as well as expedited benefits decisions and record requests.
My team tackles complex cases and works persistently with federal agencies to get results. My neighbors often turn to us as a last resort or when they are on the brink. The dollars and benefits returned to them can be a critical lifeline.
Grants – $340 million
My office also worked this year to secure more than $340 million in federal grants for this district to create jobs, invest in education and infrastructure, and support the important work of local partners.
Grants bolster vital education and job training resources for students and families who need it the most. They can grow our region’s startup hub, lead to expanding small businesses and boosting jobs.
Among the federal grants that I championed this year, most recently was $300,000<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__castor.house.gov_components_redirect_r.aspx-3FID-3D444107-2D70279659&d=DwMFaQ&c=MNHwOqQ8N1u91SoMLfIblwuGXKgp50OPUXjl8uRAbak&r=JgTTrrG9U2f4N4gbuhWWci8u29hSDhJXIMFxJAvI8X4&m=G1ZM-BGricTZeB22SaSV0K8ufgjxKUGgeEzQNmKbJlc&s=NgEQjGGiweDORbGbaOwvzlaqN58IhQpKxeWbtJF9G-Y&e=> to Tampa Bay Wave<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__castor.house.gov_components_redirect_r.aspx-3FID-3D444108-2D70279659&d=DwMFaQ&c=MNHwOqQ8N1u91SoMLfIblwuGXKgp50OPUXjl8uRAbak&r=JgTTrrG9U2f4N4gbuhWWci8u29hSDhJXIMFxJAvI8X4&m=G1ZM-BGricTZeB22SaSV0K8ufgjxKUGgeEzQNmKbJlc&s=vq75wz1a3E8wCe7QJ4yCAXmsmYoWk3j_cOwrRjJ49JM&e=> to help launch a regional investor collaborative.
Bay Area Legal Services, the Spring of Tampa Bay and Sunrise of Pasco County also received a $600,000 federal grant to provide ”seamless” assistance – legal aid for our neighbors experiencing domestic violence, sexual assault, and other issues. The University of South Florida (USF) received a $2.7 million grant to conduct trials on Alzheimer’s disease prevention. Small and large grants make a meaningful impact – from a $5,365 grant awarded to the Agency for Community Treatment Services (ACTS) by the Department of Veterans Affairs to a $2.7 million grant to H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute.
Earlier in 2018, researchers and scientists from USF and Moffitt Cancer Center shared how grants advance their research and create jobs. USF, Moffitt, nonprofits and the many growing businesses make our region a hotbed for economic growth and I am proud to team up with them to bring our tax dollars back to Tampa to create higher paying jobs.
We look forward to an active 2019! You can count on us to be your advocates.
