Hello Marion and all,
Just adding my own resounding praise to the workmanship and efficiency of John Harden. I have sent two braillers to him now, and not only is his work stellar, but he communicates regularly and turns your machine back around in dazzling time.
It is so gratifying to see one of our own providing such outstanding service, and a service that is hard to find!
I hope everyone here with a brailler will retain the information Marion has provided to contact John Harden when you need him!
Peace,
Deborah

Subject: [NFBF-L] Braille Writer Repair
Dear Federation Family,
I have a Braille writer that was in desperate need of refurbishing. Neither the backspace nor the paper advance keys were working and other keys kept sticking. A long-time colleague of mine – Sue Harden – told me about her brother, John, who does Braille writer repair and I sent the machine to him on April 13 along with payment of $100. By April 20, my Braille writer was at my front door after being completely refurbished and working like a brand new Brailler. With the cost of a new Braille writer currently running between $775 – 810 and used machines selling for $300 or more, a $100 investment will return your Brailler to like-new condition. With John’s permission, I am sending the following information and offering my own testimonial!
Fraternally yours,
Marion Gwizdala
If you have a Perkins Braille writer that is not working as well as it should, or is not working at all John Harden’s Quality Brailler Repair Service can help. The basic price for cleaning, lubricating and adjusting a Brailler is $100, and remember there is a 3 month warrantee on all work. The braille writer can be shipped through the US Postal Service using free matter for the blind but I prefer paying for shipping using UPS..
After your Braille Writer has been serviced we recommend that you keep it covered when not in use.
We are now able to refinish your machine so it looks as good as it works. Refinishing costs $60.
I regret to say that the second generation, (plastic) machines can not be repaired in my shop. Contact Perkins for more information about these machines.
The goal of keeping your Brailler maintained is to keep it in good, working condition for many years to come. Braillers that are in near mint condition that are over 50 years old are in that good of condition because they were kept in a good environment, and were maintained properly over the years.
Simple steps to keep your Brailler in top working order:
* Store your Brailler in a clean dry environment; humid and moist conditions can accelerate corrosion of the metal components.
* Clean the exterior of your Brailler on a regular basis using a lint free cloth and soft bristle brush.
* Always keep your Brailler covered when not in use; doing this will keep dust and debris from entering your Brailler and avoid premature loss of motion (sluggish action) to the keys and carriage assembly.
* Send your Brailler in to John’s Quality Repair Service for regular service; we recommend every 5 years under normal use. For Braillers that are heavily used or exposed to harsh environmental conditions, service more frequently.
If you need your Brailler repaired, or you need to buy a used Brailler or if you need your Brailler refinished contact John Harden by email jharden115 at gmail.com <mailto:jharden115 at gmail.com>
You can also call or text John at 386-846-1325 for additional information. Payment will be excepted by PayPal, personal check made out to John Harden or by credit card. It is advised that you give credit card information over the phone, not through the mail or by email. We have now implicated ApplePay and Zelle so you can now send the payment electronically. Turn-around time is usually less than one week for individual machines.
