Dear Miranda and All,

I would feel very uncomfortable bowling without rails. I want to be clear I am talking about rails blind bowlers use for orientation not bumpers that keep the balls out of the gutters. There are many reasons to have a social gathering among our chapter members. In addition to the social aspect of an activity, like bowling, is to share blindness techniques. Learning the skill of bowling as a blind person using the adaptive tools available encourage independence through the acquisition of alternative tehcniques. There are also transferable skills that are learned through a sporting event. Bowling helps improve our straight line concept, for instance. Gutter bumpers might improve our scores but will it improve our skills? Just saying!

I was once an avid bowler with a published ABC average above 200 and regularly bowled in the mid 200s. I will likely never break 200 again but I still enjoy bowling. My last set was a few years ago and my high score was around 150. I don’t know if a totally blind person can bowl without rails, as I have not encountered every totally blind bowler. I know this totally blind bowler will likely not attempt bowling without rails. And, if we have rails, I am willing to teach others how to use them.

This being said, I hope we will consider not using bumpers. If there are those who want bumpers, I hope we can have one lane with rails and no bumpers.

Fraternally yours,

Marion

Good morning all,

We will definitely look into the rail for those who need it. In addition, the meeting on Saturday, October 28 is at Beef Obrady‘s, 8810 N. Himes Ave., from 12 PM until 2 PM. I do ask that you arrive at 11:30 a.m. to order your food and for mingling.

I do know March membership has already passed, but since it is blind equality achievement month, invite a friend or two to join us this meeting and let’s make this October meeting the best we ever have had.

I will definitely be there and hopefully with my whole family. I second the notion for a guide rail because if such a rail isn’t available we’ll have to jury-rigg something for the totally blind bowlers like me. In the past I’ve taped one of my canes to a couple of chairs and used that as a guide rail when the bowling alley didn’t provide such a rail.

Hi, all:

This sounds like so much fun! Is there a way to get a bowling rail for those of us who may veer in the lane?

Louise

Greetings all,

First, I would like to think Yvonne Rosanelli, our activity coordinator for all the hard work that she puts into making our events successful and fun! Our next social event is on Saturday, November 11 And I hope you will join us. Please see the below information from Yvonne.

The bowling event is scheduled at 4847 N. Armenia Ave. pin chasers bowling club. The fee will be $15-$20 per person which will include the rental of shoes, a five dollar gaming card, unlimited bowling in the three lanes on the far side of the building. We will also get two large pizzas towards the end of art event. The time is scheduled from 12 to 3 PM on Saturday, November 11.

The more people sign up, the cheaper, the cost! So, will you join us? And make this activity extra fun! If you do plan on attending please make sure you bring your fees either at our next meeting, on Saturday, October 28 or the day of the event before you bowl.

Not a Baller? Still come and hang out! It’ll be lots of fun!
