Hi all,
I saw the below message on another list and thought I'd share it. If I didn't already know too much Hebrew to be able to do this, I'd jump on it. As someone who has taken a college course in Biblical Hebrew and a course in another context in Biblical Hebrew grammar, even though I passed, I know I did not learn what the sighted students learned in the classes. Most of what I learned meant a lot of work on my own without help. Not only will this course be fully accessible to someone who knows braille, but you will get more help from your instructor than the average student, an instructer with a big incentive to make it work. I know there was someone on this list who had already been working on learning Hebrew. Even though you might not be an absolute beginner at this point, it might still be worth contacting the person in question to see if he would include you. It's not clear if he will use hard copy braille material or expect people with braile displays. I suspect the later. If so, I might have an idea if you don't have one, but for that contact me off the list.
Lynn

>> Hi, I'm signing a contract with Bartimaeus Group so I can use my PhD in Hebrew Bible to write a Hebrew course for the blind, college/seminary level. It won't, obviously, be available for credit until a university picks it up, but the course will still exist. I'd like to find one or two blind or severely visually impaired people who'd be interested in being experimental students in this course. I'd send lessons as I complete them, and these people would go through them, learning Hebrew from this course. As you'd ask questions, I'd get an idea of what is clear and what needs work.
>>
>> There would be no charge for this. I'd only ask for feedback and minimal study commitment, as it is self-paced, so someone could go at a slower pace. Officially, a semester-length version would be about an hour of work a day 6 days a week, for 2 credits. (2 hours outside class per one hour in class = 6 work hours a week for 2 credit hours.) But, self-paced means that you could slow that down. This is distance ed, kinda like correspondence, but better.
>>
>> So, if you're blind, or functionally blind, unable to see printed Hebrew, and don't already know Hebrew, I'm looking for you to help out with this and gain a knowledge of how to read 3/4 of the Bible in the original language. E-mail me directly at raymcal at att.net
>>
>> If you are to take Hebrew in college, while my course may not be for credit right now, you might possibly be able to arrange an independent study option to do this, depending on the college. I'm willilng to work with them on that.
