[NFBJ] Plans for Next NFB in Judaism Zoom Meeting

This should not be a gripe session, or a session to voice complaints. I think it’s important to hear from those doing the work, making this happen. I don’t think we should argue about whether blind people should or should not be able to read the Torah/Haftarah. I think we should discuss The various Torah/Haftarah Trope systems that are now available in braille and how they can or should be promoted. I also think some of us are very concerned about increasing the amount of Hebrew braille literature. What can we do to promote this goal? Since we have the Marrakesh treaty, Could we reach out to sources in Israel to obtain this material? How are blind Rabbis and others accessing the Talmud, Rashi, other commentaries? So many things to discuss.

Suggestion

-1.  A few hours before, have a “rehearsal” so that we are sure that all the text works.

-2.  One person records the Zoom.

-3.  Another person will send out notes on the Zoom in accessible format.

-1.  This is not for agencies, it’s consumer-driven.

2. No anger.

-3.  No sob stories.

-4.  No attacks.

-5.  No “good bad,’ “God wants, God does not want,” no “my way or the highway.”

-6.  No rush to a resolution.  This process is ongoing.

-7.  Example:  Lenny and Jonathan may come up with innovations or discard previous innovations.

-8.  If somebody fades or gets cut off, we wait one minute. Then, sorry, we must proceed.

-9. No media coverage or big splash.

-10. New business only near the end.aaaaaaaaaaaaas

-11  The moderator may have his or her own opinions, but that is not for now.

Over the past few days, there has been a lot of activity related to blind and low vision persons reading directly from a Torah Scroll.  I am pleased that there has been so much activity on the NFBJ listserv.   Yesterday, I spoke with Yonathan Reches and Rabbi Lenny Sarko, who are mainly working on this idea.  They have told me that they are willing to participate in a Zoom meeting.  I suggested to both of them that we have the meeting sometime after the High Holidays.  They both agreed.  Previously, we have had our meetings on Sunday afternoons, eastern time so that we could have possible participation from people in other areas of the world (e.g. Israel and one person from South Africa).  I would like to propose some possible dates and see particularly from our speakers, which dates work for them, as well as others.  Here are some possible dates; October 10, 18, November 1, 8, & 15.  Please let me know what dates look good to you, particularly our presenters.  (Everyone can respond directly to me, rather than using Reply All).

My hope is that we will have a productive, and respectful discussion.

I look forward to everyone's responses!
