RE: School for the Blind Receives Exemplary Award for Dedication to Braille Literacy

The Kentucky School for the Blind (KSB) has received an Exemplary Participation Award from the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) for their efforts in the 2009-10 Braille Readers are Leaders Contest. KSB is one of only 14 schools for the blind nationwide to receive this distinction.

The award is given to schools that exhibit dedication to Braille literacy through participation in the contest by a significant portion of its student body. KSB had the second highest number of Braille readers with 32 participants. The Indiana School for the Blind was first with 38.

The Braille Readers Are Leaders Contest is a national contest for students who read Braille, kindergarten through twelfth grades, and all adult Braille readers. The purpose of the program is to promote the joy of reading for pleasure, to promote a pride in Braille as a viable literacy medium equal to print, and to demonstrate the importance of independent reading in the development of Braille literacy skills.

With more than 50,000 members, NFB is the largest and most influential membership organization of blind people in the United States. The NFB improves blind people's lives through advocacy, education, research, technology, and programs encouraging independence and self-confidence.

KSB is the statewide educational resource center on blindness. The school's mission is to provide comprehensive educational services to all Kentucky students who are blind and visually impaired, birth to 21.
