GISSONI, Betty Jean McWhorter, 82, of Louisville, passed away Wednesday March 10, 2010.
She was a member of Crescent Hill United Methodist Church, an Alumni Hall of Fame of Kentucky Wesleyan College and a retiree as director for Center of Independent Living for The Department of the Blind.
Betty taught high school at Paint Lick High School following graduation and became one of the first blind home teachers in Kentucky. In 1952 she began graduate work at the University of Pennsylvania in connection with her studies at Overbrook School for the Blind in Philadelphia, to become certified as a home teacher of the adult blind.
Relocating back to Kentucky in 1956, Gissoni established a home teaching service for the blind, and in 1960 the Commonwealth instituted a state home teaching service based on her model.  Gissoni served on the board of the Midwestern Conference of Home Teachers of the Blind and on the graduate council of Guiding Eyes for the Blind. Among her many awards were the Handicapped Professional Woman of the Year given by the Pilot Clubs of Kentucky and the Community Service Award for service to the blind awarded by the National Federation of the Blind.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Earle and Helen McWhorter; and her sister, Kathleen Dillon.
She is survived by her husband, Fred Gissoni; her sister, Geraldine Conder of Richmond, KY; and a special cousin, Adrian Boyle.
A memorial service celebrating the life of Betty will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Crescent Hill United Methodist Church, 201 S. Peterson Avenue, Louisville, KY 40206.
Memorial contributions can be made to her church.  Arch L. Heady & Son-Cralle Funeral Home and Cremations Services are in charge of arrangements.
