Description of Job Duties
This position works directly with consumers and evaluates, plans, and trains
blind and visually impaired consumers in orientation and mobility; maintains
a caseload of 70 - 100 consumers; interprets medical information in planning
& developing O & M training; travels to consumers homes and work areas to
teach sighted guide techniques, cane skills, street crossing, and use of
public transportation. Reviews referrals, schedules meetings, and makes
recommendations as to the skill levels consumers need to achieve vocational
goals. Coordinates evaluations & training with other professionals; works in
team environment such as bi-optic driving program; develops and maintains
relationships with University Disability Student Service Coordinators;
coordinates with DOT or local govt. to establish traffic signals & safety
devices.

Characteristics of the Class :
As a Certified rehabilitation specialist, provides expert services to
persons with disabilities in the development, coordination, instruction,
implementation and monitoring of specialized vocational rehabilitation
services, programs and/or activities, such as orientation and mobility,
assistive technology, rehabilitation technology, job placement and
development, supported employment etc. Serves as team leader in Certified
field of expertise and is responsible for direction, oversight and for
meeting the training objectives of the consumer and the rehabilitation
program; and other duties as required.
Typical Working Conditions and Unique Physical Requirements :
Work is performed primarily in an office setting. Occasional travel will be
required to coordinate services between customers and the agency.
Additional Requirements :
Applicants and employees in this classification may be required to submit to
a drug screening test and background check.
