The National Federation of the Blind of Texas Austin Chapter (NFB of Austin) Partners with Groupon Grassroots to promote a mentoring enrichment initiative for blind youth in our area.

The NFB of Austin Braille Saturday School will provide six hours of mentorship, Braille literacy, adaptive school supplies, and social opportunities for blind children in the Austin, Texas area each month throughout the 2012/2013 annual school year.
The NFB of Austin and Groupon Grassroots, the philanthropic arm of Groupon, announce the launch of a local campaign to enhance the lives of blind youth in the Austin area.
The NFB of Austin Braille Saturday School campaign will be available on the Austin Groupon Grassroots page beginning on Wednesday, August 8 and running through Wednesday, August 15. Utilizing Groupon Grassroots’ collective action model, Groupon subscribers can pledge support for the Braille Saturday School initiative in increments of $10.00, with each $10.00 providing a unique package consisting of six hours of mentoring, adaptive school supplies, and Braille materials each month per participant.
The NFB of Austin Braille Saturday school will engage blind youth with mentorship, literacy, and learning. The NFB has informally mentored blind youth since its inception in 1940. The NFB of Austin is enthusiastic to formalize this project to guaranty blind youth a chance at independence. Help blind youth succeed with your generous support in our mission to change what it means to be blind in the Austin community.
“We are excited to employ the collective action model of Groupon Grassroots to raise support for the mentoring of blind youth in the Austin community,” said Richie Flores, NFB of Texas Youth Coordinator. “We look forward to creating new awareness for the National Federation of the Blind of Texas Austin Chapter as one of the local organizations in Austin to be featured on Groupon Grassroots.”
The NFB of Austin Braille Saturday School will change the lives of blind youth in the Austin area with a jam-packed Saturday each month throughout the 2012/2013 school year. We will be emphasizing one on one mentoring, Braille literacy lessons, and opportunities to learn essential alternative techniques in blindness. Blind role models will share and teach Braille, orientation and mobility, and independent living skills with each participant setting the stage for future success.
