> Dale Carter Cooper COOPER, DALE CARTER, 94, died Saturday, August 25, 2012. She was born in Danville, VA on January 22, 1918, the daughter of John Wesley Carter and Mary Freeman Carter. In 1935, she left Danville to pursue a professional theatre career in New York. The following years, she studied acting and performed in summer stock. Dale married in 1940 and moved with her family to Louisville in 1948. She began her career at the American Printing House for the Blind (Louisville) in 1952, reading consecutively for 39 years. In 2002, she received the Alexander Scourby Award for Life Time Achievement from the American Foundation for the Blind. Ms. Cooper returned to performing professionally in 1967. She appeared in regional theatres around the United States: Flat Rock Playhouse, Flat Rock, NC, Barter Theatre in Abingdon, VA, Cleveland Playhouse, Actors Theatre of Louisville and the Alley Theatre in Houston. In addition, she was seen at dinner theatres in Louisville, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Montgomery, AL and Lubbock, TX. Throughout her career, Ms. Cooper was never "type-cast," playing a wide range of roles from the mother in Barefoot in the Park to Mary Tyrone in Long Day's Journey into Night. Her many contributions to the Louisville community included serving on the board of directors of the Louisville Theatrical Association, Stage One: The Louisville Children's Theatre and the Women's Endowment of Christ Church Cathedral, and the Kentucky Chapter of the English Speaking Union. In 1968, she received the distinction of becoming the first female lay reader in the Episcopal Diocese of Kentucky. She was predeceased by her parents and her son, William Carter Cooper. Ms. Cooper is survived by her son, Wray Thomas Cooper Jr. and daughter, M. Austin Cooper, both of Louisville; four granddaughters and two great-grandchildren. Celebration of Life Service: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Christ Church Cathedral, 421 S. Second St., followed by a reception in Bishops Hall. Pearson's is entrusted with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Endowment Fund, Christ Church Cathedral, 421 S. 2nd St., Louisville, KY 40202; the Scholarship Fund of the Episcopal Church Home, 7504 Westport Road, Louisville, KY 40222 or the Scholarship Fund of the Kentucky Branch of the English Speaking Union, Art Dietz, 2300 Wendler Lane, Louisville, KY 40272.
