[Nfbk] the cardinal, summer 2012

MessageI know someone who used to be a volunteer audio describer. As I understand, those individuals are volunteers. They have opportunities to view the performances before hand in order to take notes to write their descriptions. Perhaps they simply don't have enough volunteers. I also know, that often, no one comes to audio described performances after the describers have worked so hard to prepare their descriptions. I'm sure that is frustrating to them. So, I guess it is like many other things. Until we take advantage of the opportunities that we have, the powers that be won't see the need to broaden those opportunities for us.

I have asked about description on a different night (at the time of getting tickets or even before purchasing when calling for information at least a week or more in advance) and all I am told is that description is only offered on the matinee that is listed. There was no effort to make any arrangements, I was simply told it was only offered at that one performance.

I am not complaining about the description, only the fact that they have offered it in the past at an evening performance and with more than one showing as your choice of performance with description. The service has been reduced to virtually only matinee performances. The description service was so wonderful and added so much that that is why it is so disappointing to not be able to get it for evening performances.

If you noticed, she says that they will try to make accommodations for those who don't come on the designated date as long as they know in advance. We have attended numerous matinee performances with description and have nothing but praise for the service and the performance.

I am extremely disappointed that all but two of the Kentucky Center for the Arts described performances are matinees. Matinees are typically performed by the B cast and often shortened. Do they think that the blind do not know the difference? And only one performance out of the whole run is described? This is the second year that I have encountered this.

I love going to see the Nutcracker most years, and found out how much more I enjoyed it the first time I had audio description for a performance (a Saturday night). The next year, description was only offered at a matinee. Both I and the sighted people that went with me were very disappointed with the B cast and abbreviated format. Last year, due to medical issues in our family, we were late in deciding that we could make a performance. It was unanimous that we did NOT want a matinee, and I discovered that we had already missed the performance that was described, but it was only a matinee so we would not have chosen it anyway.

If you enjoy matinees, that fine, but I have a friend that majored in theatre in college and worked as an asm so I have had a lot of experience with seeing both versions of a performance and my preference is definitely evening performances that are NOT opening night. It is such a shame that when a service is offered, it is then taken away and you are left with substandard choices.

The Kentucky Center for the Arts Audio Description Program

Editor's note: Following is a list of dates for theatrical performances for which audio description will be provided. If you have been avoiding live theater because you felt that as a blind or visually impaired person you couldn't enjoy it, I strongly urge you to reconsider and attend one of these performances. The description comes through a headset and is inserted at appropriate times and does not interfere with dialogue or music.
