MUSIC OF MARIA THERESIA VON PARADIS TO BE CELEBRATED AT APH
Louisville, KY (August 20, 2012) - The Museum of the American Printing
House for the Blind (APH) will host a free celebration of the life and
works of Maria Theresia von Paradis on Saturday, September 15 from
11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Austrian performer, composer, and
teacher was a contemporary of Mozart's. Blind since the age of three,
and largely forgotten in today's society, von Paradis created a
sensation in the eighteenth century wherever she performed.
This event, as part of APH's "Bards and Storytellers" annual arts,
folklore, and performance series, celebrates the historical traditions
of entertainers with vision loss. Attendees will not only have a
chance to enjoy Von Paradis's music, but will have the opportunity to
learn about the personal events and forces that shaped her career.
The program is for all ages, but best for adults and older children.
Space is limited, so please make reservations by September 14 by
calling (502) 899-2213 or sending email to
kcarpenter at aph.org<mailto:kcarpenter at aph.org>.
Louisville musicians Barbara Henning and Adelle LeJeune will perform
several of Von Paradis's works:
* The Sicilienne, a Piano/Violin Duet, and Maria's best known
work. Most often performed by pianists, the composition has been
adapted, here, for violin and piano.
* Two lieder, with piano accompaniment: Morganlied Eines Armen
Mannes (Morning Song of a Poor Man) and Das Gartnerliedchen (the
Gardener)
* Fantasie in G, in six movements, a piano solo.
Violinist Barbara Henning has been a professional musician since the
early 1990s. She is a graduate of the Kentucky School for the Blind
and the University of Louisville School of Music where she received a
Bachelor of Arts in performance. She is cantor for St. Leonard Church
and violinist at Holy Spirit Church in Louisville.
Adelle LeJeune frequently performs at area churches and events. She
has a degree in music therapy/piano from Loyola University in New
Orleans and was pianist for the Kentucky School for the Blind
Generations Choir.
