NLS Magazines Now on Digital Cartridge

In Spring 2013 NLS launched its digital magazine program. Now all
NLS-produced audio magazines are circulated on digital cartridges
instead of cassette tape. We hope you enjoy the enhanced sound and
navigation capabilities. Digital magazine cartridges must be returned
to enable NLS to produce future issues. The cartridge loan period for
a weekly publication is one week after you receive it. The cartridge
loan period for a monthly, bimonthly, or quarterly publication is one
month after you receive it. Please treat a magazine the same as a
book: read it, return it to the same red container it came in, flip
the mail card over, and place it in the mail. Remember; if you have
two overdue cartridges your subscriptions will stop until they are
returned. If you are no longer interested in receiving magazines,
please call us to cancel a subscription and return the cartridges you
have so NLS can continue to provide others with high-quality digital
magazines.

You may sometimes receive a digital magazine cartridge that has more
than one magazine on it. Your player will not automatically play each
magazine one after the other. The NLS digital talking-book player has
a feature called Bookshelf that allows you to play all the magazines
on a cartridge. To activate the Bookshelf feature, press and hold
down the green Play/Stop button until you hear a beep. The player
will announce the number of items on the cartridge, and the name of
the first magazine to play. Quickly press (but do not hold) the FF
button to hear the name of the next magazine. Press Play/Stop to
start playing it. Complete audio instructions for using the Bookshelf
feature are included on every cartridge with more than one magazine.

A complete list of NLS magazines is included in each issue of the
Talking Book Topics bi-monthly catalog. All NLS magazines are also
available for download from the BARD website. Please enjoy your
digital magazines!

Coming Soon: Apps for iOS and Android Devices

NLS continues to work on developing apps to play downloadable digital
talking books on iOS devices such as the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch,
as well as Android smartphones and tablets. The release date for these
apps has not been set, but the iOS app will be ready approximately two
months before the Android app. Both apps will be free, but patrons
must be signed up for BARD, the Braille and Audio Reading Download
site, to log in and use them. Patrons will have the option to
download books from their BARD wishlist directly to their devices or
to transfer downloaded books from a computer. To sign up for BARD,
visit http://nlsbard.loc.gov and choose the link for BARD application
instructions.
