Four hundred thousand people with disabilities in the USA work for sub-standard wages, some of

them for as little as 3¢ an hour.   On Friday, Nov 1,

at 2:30 pm PST on KPFA 94.1 fm, www.kpfa.org Pushing Limits discusses these "sheltered workshops"

- segregated, low-pay work places for workers with disabilities.

 

This August people with disabilities protested in front of 90 Goodwills around the country.  In the back rooms of Goodwill, people with disabilities turn cast offs into items for resell.  In other places, they do assembly work for Goodwill.

 

Our guest, Mr. Anil Lewis is the director of advocacy and policy for the National Federation of the Blind and an expert on these sheltered workshops.  He and the Federation have called for a boycott of Goodwill and want to repeal Section 14 C of the Fair Labor Standards Act.  It is Section 14 C that allows employers to legally pay these sub-minimum wages.
