White Cane Safety Day, October 15, 2013

11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. on 4th Street Live!

Emcee: Dawn Gee, Wave 3 TV 

 

11:30 – 1:00 vendor/agency information tables are open

 

11:50: Dawne Gee– invites people to observe as Kelly Stewart and students from Kentucky School for the Blind demonstrate use of the white cane

 

Noon: Dawne Gee – welcomes everyone to White Cane Safety Day

 

Bradley Mann – sings National Anthem

 

Dawne Gee– tells history of the white cane and White Cane Safety Day

 

Dawne Gee – introducesspeakers one at a time, when it istheir turn to address attendees:

1.     Christa Robinson, Constituent Liaison, Office of Congressman John Yarmuth – brings greetings from Congressman Yarmuth.

2.     Dawn Gee (or possibly representative from State Gov. - Darrel is checking) – reads proclamation from Governor Steve Beshear(Nancy will bring proclamation)

3.     Darrell Aniton, Advocacy and Outreach Manager, Louisville Metro Dept. of Community Services& Revitalization - reads a proclamation from Mayor Greg Fischer

4.     Judge David Holton(Keynote speaker - brief bio available for introduction)–  talks about his life experiences

a.     Barry Barker, Executive Director Transit Authority of River City (TARC)– gives a (memorial)tribute to Tommy Rider and Jim Shaw

b.     Announces the White Cane Safety Day awards have been named the Rider-Shaw White Cane Safety Day awards in their honor.

c.      announces the winner of the 2013 Rider-Shaw White Cane Safety Day Award

5.     Officer Matt Butler, Louisville Metro Police (representing Chief Steve Conrad)– tells about laws relating to safety for people that use a white cane

6.     Marvin Greene, General Manager First Transit– explains how First Transit,as a contractor to TARC for the provision of TARC 3 paratransit service, accommodates TARC3 passengerswho are blind or have vision problems 

 

Dawn Gee – announces that she and Orientation and Mobility Specialist,Wayne Corley, will give a demonstration of the use of a white canewhere she will participate blindfolded.
