> Wendover, Utah (August 29, 2014): The National Federation of the Blind today congratulated member Dan Parker, who was blinded in a drag-racing accident in 2012, on completing a record-setting run on the Bonneville Salt Flats as part of this year’s Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials. Mr. Parker operated a three-wheeled motorcycle, which he constructed himself, with the aid of a GPS system that gave him audible cues in order to help him maintain a straight course. The GPS system was designed and built by engineer Patrick Johnson. Mr. Parker completed a two-way run, reaching an officially recorded top speed of 64.8 mph on one pass and an average top speed of 62.05 over both passes, thereby setting a world record for the 51-85 cc two-stroke cycle-car class, pending ratification. The National Federation of the Blind is one of several sponsors contributing funds and equipment to help Parker complete his “Quest for the Salt,” and Parker wore leathers with the logos of the National Federation of the Blind and its Blind Driver Challenge™.

> Mark Riccobono, President of the National Federation of the Blind, said: “Last year I was thrilled to witness Dan Parker’s run on the Bonneville Salt Flats, the first ever by a blind person. This year, Dan has not only proven once again that blindness is no barrier to living the life you want, but has set a world speed record in the process. Dan recognizes that, being an active member of the Federation, he gets even more inspiration than he provides to others. His innovative and determined spirit will no doubt drive him to even greater success on the race course and in life, and that success will raise the hopes and expectations of all blind Americans.”

>
> The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want; blindness is not what holds you back.
