are free and take place at 1839 Frankfort Avenue, unless otherwise noted.

BRAILLE FOR THE SIGHTED August 5, 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., Register by Aug.

Be inspired by the story of Louis Braille, who was twelve when he conceived
the writing system that changed the lives of blind people all over the
world. Learn the basics of Louis's alphabet and practice writing on a
braille slate and a braillewriter. Best for children ages 8-14.

 

APH FILM FESTIVAL: Explore how blindness is depicted by Hollywood at our APH
Museum Film Festival. The event screens films featuring an important
character who is blind, followed by discussion. Films are audio described
for those who are blind. Best for older children and adults

Butterflies Are Free (1972) A blind man (Edward Albert) moves into his own
apartment against the wishes of his overprotective mother (Eileen Heckart),
and befriends the aspiring actress who lives next door (Goldie Hawn). Eileen
Heckart won an Oscar as best supporting actress. 

.       July 26, 2014, 12:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Register by noon on July 25

See No Evil, Hear No Evil (1989). A blind man (Richard Pryor) and a deaf man
(Gene Wilder) witness a murder. However, the police are unwilling to accept
them as creditable witnesses, and so the pair work together to bring the
murderers to justice. Farcial situations, broad humor. Not for kids.

.       August 16, 2014, 12 noon - 3:00 p.m. Register by noon on August 15

Ray (2004), an account of the life and career of the legendary rhythm and
blues musician Ray Charles. Jamie Foxx received the Academy Award for his
performance. Rated PG13.

BARDS & STORYTELLERS: PLAYWRIGHT LEONA GODIN
September 13, 2014, 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Register by September 12.

Join us to meet Leona Godin, a New York-based playwright and performer,
blind since birth. Leona has written and directed plays focusing on Helen
Keller and on the early history of education for the blind. We will hear
about the personal events and forces that have shaped her career, and we'll
also be treated to a few performance excerpts from her plays. This program,
as part of APH's "Bards and Storytellers" annual arts, folklore, and
performance series, celebrates the historical traditions of entertainers
with vision loss. Best for adults and children age 12 and up.
