October 16, 2014, 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Park Suite, Hyatt Regency Hotel, 311 South Fourth Street, Louisville, Kentucky 40202

Using the model of the AFB Solutions Forum, this meeting will feature discussion of issues related to the development and delivery of accessible curricular content in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) areas of the Core Curriculum.

The discussion panel will include some of the leading experts on STEM access from around the country:

- Steve Noble is a Research Consultant and Lecturer at the University of Louisville, as well as Content Specialist for Mathematics and Science at Bridge Multimedia. He will discuss new math navigation capabilities in the works for MathPlayer Next, including a demo of audio navigation of math expressions in Word documents using MathPlayer with Window-Eyes.

- Greg Stilson, HumanWare, is Product Manager for the Braille Products Division. He will discuss how the new mathematics capabilities of the BrailleNote can support students in the science and math classrooms as the first all-in-one Nemeth solution on an electronic braille device.

- Dave Schleppenbach is CEO of gh, and will be joined by Wunji Lau, Technical and Marketing Consultant for gh. The MathHear software from gh, LLC provides teachers and students an easy-to-learn system for reading, hearing, composing, and solving math equations. This presentation will demonstrate the software's features, including full voicing (using a simplified MathSpeak format), keyboard controls, and possibilities for use in both traditional and online classrooms.

- Rob Wall Emerson and Dawn Anderson from Western Michigan University will outline the study they have been conducting on describing math images for students who are blind. These are not the math equations, as such, but the mathematically oriented images that appear so frequently in texts but are often not accessible. They are collecting data on students in grades 5, 8, and 11. They will outline their study and discuss trends they see emerging in the data as they are collecting data.

- Rosanne Hoffmann, APH, STEM Project Leader, will discuss the alignment of APH products with the Next Generation Science Standards and will gather audience feedback on future STEM products.

This related meeting will be held in the Park Suite during Annual Meeting on Thursday, October 16, from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.
