System Update
TARC is progressing towards the implementation of a new smart-card enabled fare collection system, called <http://cl.exct.net/?ju=fe2a107374610674741779&ls=fdbb157571670d7a761074716c&m=ff2a13757c64&l=fec61c767160067c&s=fdf015787066027d7d177772&jb=ffcf14&t=> MyTARC, aboard all its buses by late summer 2015.
Executive Director J. Barry Barker said, however, that three critical components necessary to the system's success still need to be addressed and improved prior to the launch of MyTARC: training; testing and public education.
Within the last week, coach operators and road supervisors began training on how to use the system. Training will continue until all operators have the opportunity to become familiar with it, Barker said.
Conflict resolution training will also be provided to coach operators prior to launch. "It's important to give our operators the training they need to help settle any misunderstandings relating to the new fareboxes in a safe, peaceful manner," Barker said.
Last week, TARC staff began testing the system. Later this month the testing phase will expand to include a pilot program with new fareboxes installed on several buses that will travel on local and express routes. The pilot program is expected to begin in late May and last through at least June.

Additionally, a substantial public information effort ensuring TARC riders will have the most current, accurate information on how to use all facets of the system will take place prior to the launch. That effort will likely include public meetings, mobile demonstrations, information distributed aboard all TARC coaches, at TARC's website, through the agency's stakeholders and via social media.
Barker said that component is maybe the most critical of all.
"We will be sure our customers have ample advance notice so they can prepared for the change, have their questions answered and concerns heard so there's a smooth transition," he said. "While MyTARC's debut is approaching, I want to assure everyone it won't happen until we're sure it's ready to be successful."
TARC's current fare collection system is more than 15 years old, requires significant maintenance, and only accepts paper tickets and cash. The new system will allow customers to reload a card with value online for long-term use, and provide quick, "tap and go" boarding on TARC buses. Cash -exact fare only - will remain a payment option for regular single rides, but TARC will no longer be offering paper transfers.
Those using a MyTARC Card will receive a free transfer for up to two hours after their initial boarding. Fares will not increase under the new plan - those using a pre-loaded card will ride for $1.50 and receive a transfer, just as they do currently. TARC will make the cards available for purchase online and at TARC locations, and is seeking to increase its distribution network through the utilization of retail outlets.

"It is crucial that we not rush into this," Barker said. "It still looks like we'll be operating the new system this summer contingent on a successful training and testing period. Stay tuned."
