Assistive Technology Teacher

The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE), Office of Teaching & Learning (OTL), Division of Learning Services, Kentucky School for the Blind (KSB) in Louisville (Jefferson County) has an opening for an Assistive Technology Teacher.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 
 
Work with teachers to infuse assistive technology into Individual Education Programs (IEP’s) for assigned students in all areas of functioning (Existence; Communication; Body Support, Alignment, and Positioning; Travel and Mobility; Environmental Interaction; Education and Transition; and Sports, Leisure, and Recreation).

 

Work with the IEP team to facilitate selection and configuration of alternate and augmentative communication systems for students.

 

Work as part of a team to develop assistive technology implementation plans for students including instructional strategies and progress monitoring plans.

 

Prepare achievement reports of student progress as prescribed in the assistive technology implementation plan at required intervals throughout the school year.

 

Direct project personnel in the cost effective use of computing resources, including application software tools for staff and students (e.g., Smartboards and Smartboard access for students with visual impairments, iPad, iPad accessibility, and iPad apps, Duxbury. There are hundreds of other examples that could be used.)

 

Provide technical advice and training to teachers and students on assistive technology software and hardware.

 

Provide outside consultants and/or contract personnel technical support in the use of the state’s assistive technology resources.

 

Work with teachers, vendors, and others to identify assistive technology performance and/or technical issues affecting student access and advises school administrators as to their resolutions.

 

Assist teachers and supervisors in creating technology solutions for students with visual impairments.

 

Collaborates with all related staff including teachers, student life, vocational rehab and campus personnel.

 

Keeps abreast of new assistive technology hardware and software by attending national professional conferences (i.e., Closing the Gap, Assistive Technology Industry Association (ATIA), and Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (AER).

 

Perform other duties as assigned. 

 

Minimum Requirements:

 

Applicants must hold a valid Kentucky Teaching Certificate with the Education and Professionals Standards Board. Technology Education related Certification or degree is required.  Applicants must possess certification to teach students who are Blind/Visually Impaired.  If persons do not possess VI certification, they must obtain it within 4 years of beginning employment. 

 

Applicants and employees in this classification may be required to submit to a drug screening test and background check.

 

In accordance with KRS 161.220 the applicant selected for this position will become a member of the Kentucky Teachers Retirement System.

 

2015-2016 Salary:  Dependent upon qualifications, training and experience.
