Subject: Re: [NFBK] passing of Denis Franklin

Hello friends,

For me the passing of Dennis is the passing of one of those rare people who truly didn’t care if you were popular or liked, but if you had a passion and worked hard. He truly saw people, cared about them, and never stopped thinking about others even in his own loss. I will never forget, after his amazing wife Denise passed away, how he kept their mutual love of braille alive by requesting that those wishing to celebrate her life donate to the Kentucky BELL program that she was so looking forward to volunteering with that summer. Two of the three BrailleWriters in our home were given to us by Dennis after Denise’s passing. He wanted all three of us to have a BrailleWriter of our own. Now one of those machines will go with Taryn to LCB next week.

My first Convention, in Atlanta, I marched side by side with Dennis and Denise. A reporter walking along side us asked a question to which I passionately responded. To this day I don’t remember what I said, but what I remember is Dennis turning to me and saying, “that was perfect.” I was young, I was nobody important, but that single conversation deeply impacts my feelings about mentoring blind young people. They taught me so much The Kentucky affiliate will be forever changed by this amazing man and we will never forget him.

Sincerely,
Jayne Seif

>> Good Afternoon,
>> It is with a heavy heart that I have to tell you that Dennis Franklin passed away early Friday morning, August 20th. He had only been ill for a couple of weeks. He was admitted to the hospital after a fall at his home. Things just seemed to progress very quickly. Dennis has been a member of the National Federation of the Blind of Kentucky since the late 1960’s. He served as treasurer of the Affiliate for a number of years. He also served a couple of terms as President of the Greater Louisville Chapter. Dennis had a passion for doing legislative work. Going to Frankfort and Washington D. C. were both exciting and rewarding to him. Dennis never faltered in his Federation spirit and philosophy. Keep the Franklin family in your hearts and prayers.
