Folks:

You are on this list because you represent important Kentucky Blindness
organizations and I need your help. As a part of our long-term strategy at
the American Printing House to publicize the AFB Helen Keller Archive and
make it more widely available, we’re hosting a symposium here in Louisville
that we are very excited about. The details are below. Registration just
went live. <https://cvent.me/1Owyb3> I hope you’ll share it with your
friends, colleagues, and your community, both locally and nationally, and
we hope you’ll consider attending! This is going to be an incredibly
diverse program featuring young voices, veteran scholars, people who are
Blind, people who are Deafblind, and people who are Deaf. There are some,
at the national level, who expressed doubts that Kentucky is the right
place for this collection. We want to prove them wrong. I would love to
collaborate with you to get the word out to the community, via email,
social media, or other formats unique to your organizations. If you have
ideas on ways to publicize the symposium or people I should contact, I’d
love to know. Feel free to send me any ideas. We can’t wait!

Hidden Legacies of Helen Keller

Everyone thinks they know Helen Keller’s story. But Keller – an author,
activist, fundraiser, advocate, sister, daughter, ambassador, friend,
celebrity, and champion of women, people with disabilities and those living
in poverty around the globe – defies easy description. Join us for a
two-day symposium that explores, from dynamic and diverse perspectives
across the spectrum of disability history scholarship and experiences, the
hidden historical legacy and context of this great American. The talks will
be accompanied by highlights from the rich archives of the American
Foundation for the Blind (AFB), Keller’s employer for forty years. The AFB
collections are now located in the Museum of the American Printing House
for the Blind (APH) in Louisville, Kentucky. On Sunday, September 18,
there is an additional opportunity, a behind-the-scenes tour of the AFB
Helen Keller Archive at the Printing House.
