Hello from the Team at AppleVis.

We wanted to share a couple of items of news with you.

The AppleVis Golden Apples of 2014

We are pleased to announce the results of the third annual AppleVis Golden Apple Awards.

The AppleVis Golden Apple Awards were launched in 2012 as a way for the community to recognize the best apps, products, and developers of a given year.

To be shortlisted for the Golden Apple Awards, apps must be completely accessible to blind and low vision users; they must be exceptionally good at their intended purpose; and they must have a developer who has continually demonstrated a strong commitment to accessibility.

For the Best iOS App of 2014, the AppleVis community chose Voice Dream Reader in a landslide vote. Dropbox took second place, and Twitterrific 5 for Twitter came in in third.

Dice World! Six Free Dice Games! took the Golden Apple for Best iOS Game of 2014. Audio Defence : Zombie Arena followed as a very close second, and Papa Sangre II placed third.

The community voted KNFBReader Best Assistive iOS App of 2014, with BlindSquare and TapTapSee - Blind & Visually Impaired Camera also being popular choices.

VMWare Fusion was chosen as the best Mac application of 2014. 1Password - Password Manager and Secure Wallet followed close behind, and Amadeus Pro placed third.

MIPsoft (Creator of BlindSquare) was voted as the Developer of the Year, with Sensotec nv/K-NFB Reading Technology (Creator of KNFBReader) and Somethin' Else (Creator of Audio Defence : Zombie Arena, Papa Sangre II, and others) rounding out the top three.

We would like to extend our congratulations to the winners of the 2014 Golden Apple Awards.

Apple Now Offering 14-Day No Questions Asked Refunds For iTunes and iBooks Purchases In The European Union

Apple has introduced a new 14-day no questions asked return policy for iTunes, App Store and iBooks purchases in some European countries, including the UK, Germany, Italy and France.

This can only be described as tremendous news for VoiceOver users in these countries, who will now no longer find themselves out of pocket for inaccessible apps.

Previously, purchases were legally binding once the download was initiated, with Apple offering no official policy on refunds for apps which proved to be inaccessible with VoiceOver. Although many people have been able to obtain refunds on the basis of an app being inaccessible, the absence of any clear policy meant that your chances of getting a refund could depend upon who you spoke with at Apple and how well they understood how VoiceOver worked.

Now, Apple has updated its terms to include a specific no questions asked 14-day return window that includes all purchases apart from gift cards:

Right of cancellation: If you choose to cancel your order, you may do so within 14 days from when you received your receipt without giving any reason, except iTunes Gifts which cannot be refunded once you have redeemed the code.

Apple states that it will refund users within two weeks of receiving notice of cancellation either through its Report a Problem feature or a written statement.

The changes appear to be related to a new consumer rights directive in the European Union that introduced a required 14 calendar day right of cancellation or return period for both goods and services purchased in EAA countries.

We can only hope that VoiceOver users outside of Europe will soon be able to take advantage of similar entitlement.
