From the list owner: Many of us found ourselves looking up to people in the technology field because of how products invented by these individuals impacted our lives in a positive and meaningful way. Steve Jobs was probably such a person for many people. When I was first introduced to assistive technology I actually didn’t know anything about people like Steve Jobs or Bill Gates. However, on February 17, 1989, exactly 32 years ago on the date that I am composing this message, I sent a check for $1249 to a company named Blazie Engineering for a Braille ‘n Speak notetaker, a service contract, cable adapters and a cassette tape interface for transferring documents to and from a tape recorder. That small but powerful notetaker would not only change my life but would revolutionize it. Deane Blazie was truly my Steve Jobs. Two years later I would find myself moving to Maryland to work for Blazie Engineering for nearly seven years. Without realizing it at the time that position and the experience it would give me launched my career in the assistive technology space with May of this year being my 30th anniversary working in this space. Deane’s products changed my life and his company would do so as well, providing me with a career that I never would have expected and one for which I am extremely grateful and thankful for.

Meet Blindness Tech Pioneer Dean Blazie

On this episode, Anil and Chris talk with Dean Blazie, who has been working with blind people to develop technology we can use since the 1960s. They discuss how dean got involved in working with blind people through his relationship with Tim Cranmer; how initial ideas they worked on developed into products for blind people; and the origins of the Braille’n’Speak, the pioneering Braille notetaker that took the blind community by storm in the late 1980s and paved the way for similar devices in use today.
