Dear Guide Dog Users,
As many of us prepare to travel to Austin for Convention, I want to share an important update for anyone returning to Maryland with a guide dog.
Due to the New World screwworm detections in Texas, Maryland has implemented temporary import requirements for animals returning from Texas, including service dogs. At this time, guide dog users returning to Maryland with their dogs will need to obtain an Official Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (OCVI), sometimes called a health certificate or CVI, from a USDA-accredited veterinarian before returning to Maryland. The certificate must be issued within 72 hours of travel back into Maryland and must include the required screwworm statement from the veterinarian.
The New World Screwworm has not been detected in Austin. According to a conversation I had with a rep from Guide Dogs for the Blind,
the risk to guide dogs attending convention is considered low. Guide dogs are typically with us, indoors much of the time, and not generally in environments where exposure would be expected. New World screwworm infection requires more than simply being in Texas. Generally, a dog would need to have an open wound and exposure to screwworm flies that lay eggs in that wound.
I offer practical precautions:
* Check your dog daily for cuts, scrapes, or irritated skin.
* Keep any wounds clean and follow veterinary recommendations.
* If your dog has a wound, speak with a veterinarian before travel home so any needed documentation or treatment can be completed.
* Consider identifying and scheduling with a USDA-accredited veterinarian in the Austin area before your return trip .
