<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:#1F497D">While the information in this study is important and certainly not to be taken lightly, it also flies in the face of a positive philosophy of blindness that
would take issue with such claims. For one thing, of course, the article does not distinguish between disabilities nor does it break down socio-economic factors which would definitely bear out more of the story.
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:#1F497D"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:#1F497D">For my part, I believe and advocate for the idea that , at least in terms of blindness, the formula of proper skills training and commensurate levels of increased
confidence reduces blindness as the cause of violence as victims can transform themselves into victors. The unfortunate effect of stories like this one perpetuates the fear and reticence that blind and low vision people often feel and this becomes something
of a fulfilled prophecy. My comments are obviously generalizations as are those presented in the article but it is critical to put all of this in proper perspective. I live and work by the principle that blindness in itself does not make one a victim. Confidence
is derived from proper training and through the civil rights support of the National Federation of the Blind that says even as we walk alone in confidence and using common sense, we also march together.
