Subject: [NFBMD] Attention! Action Needed

Hello NFB Maryland!

Hello All!

I have 2 important announcements. Both of them will have an effect on your personal life. Please call your congressman TODAY to tell him that you are against the plan to eliminate the extra income tax deduction for blindness. Read John Pare’s message below.

Don’t miss the AIRA announcement which is also below. This is a great opportunity to try it out for a month for free! See you in Towson.

“Beginning in the 1940s, as a result of NFB’s advocacy, the IRS has included an increased standard deduction for blind people compared to non-blind people. This deduction reduces one’s taxable income and the corresponding amount of taxes a blind person has to pay. In 2017, the standard deduction for a non-blind person filing as single is $6,350 and the standard deduction for a blind person filing as single is $7,900, an increase of $1,550. As far as the effect this deduction has on how much in taxes one would have to pay, that depends on one’s individual tax situation.

The deduction is not intended to pay for a specific item, but all of the extra items that blind people have to pay for to live the lives we want. This could be anything from transportation to guide dog supplies.

Please continue to make your calls and send your emails. The best way to contact your member of Congress is to call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask for the office in question. Emailing your member of Congress is also a good idea. If you do so, please copy me at JPare at nfb.org<mailto:JPare at nfb.org>.”

“For NFB Maryland, Aira is providing everyone in attendance the opportunity to receive a FREE month of Aira! No fine print, no hidden costs, just a free month to try Aira for yourself in your own home, at work, or on the go! All you need is a smartphone and a credit card in the event you should chose to continue our service.

To sign up for a free month, send a text saying 'NFBMD' to 619-993-0002<tel:(619)%20993-0002> . An Aira representative will get back to you to get your shipping address, and set up your account, which will take less than 3 minutes to have you enrolled.

This special offer starts today and is ONLY available to NFB Maryland attendees, and will not be offered after 12:00pm Sunday November 12th. If you sign up before 12:00pm local time Friday, November 10th, we will even include a pair of Aftershokz Sport Titanium headphones with your free month. This offer is available to new customers only.

Looking forward to a great conference and for you exploring with us!

Kelly, AIRA”

Sharon Maneki, President
National Federation of the Blind of Maryland
The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want; blindness is not what holds you back.
