Hi Linda,
Thanks for all your hard work. I would be interested in helping youth with
braille. I have started doing this at the resource room here in flint.
There is a lot of need. Maybe this could be done at camp T?
We have crossroads village and Huckleberry Railroad. You can shop a little
and eat there also. They have some rides and a restored carrosel in it's own
building. When NFB had a chapter here, folks went and had a nice time.It is
open in the summer and now during the Christmas Season. Groups usually get a
better rate.
Our Christmas walk which is free is coming up december 5. It involves the
whole cultural center and there is a free concert of Christmas music and
much to see. Applewood which is the estate of C.S. Mott is open
also--usually there are free treats there and food sold at other places. It
is December 5. Involves quite a bit of walking. Sloan Musuem which has old
cars and other things is open.
There is a Winter Camp at Camp Au Sable in Grayling. It is only $35. for the
week. I think the camp would lear n a lot from the nfb and vice versa. It is
880 acres and very wooded. A lot of people and organizations are having a
rough time now so somehow maybe the differences between these organizations
can be worked out. Sarah McCubbin went to the summer camp and I went
also. The most fun was biking on Mackinaw Island and Biking up to Hartwick
Pines. They have a 2 mile board walk around the lake but I didn't get a
chance to do that. The food is veggie. The Christian music is contemporary.
www.christianrecord.org I think the winter camp consists also of quite a
bit of outdoor activities such as tubing, cross country skiing etc. There
are people there from Canada. you have to be 14 to go I believe to the
Winter Camp.
I understand Greenfield Village has been restored and the sidewalks are
repaired etc. I do not know how much it costs.
We have some state parks around here--one in Holly that is pretty Hilly
and has a lake. I cannot remember the name. There is also a county park that
has a water slide and it is very pretty also--I think it is called Groveland
Oaks. My folks used to put up hay there for the previous private owner.
Holly has a festival in Sept. regarding this woman who came there and tried
to smashed in all the bars during prohibition. It is a cute little town that
has a small downtown.
Flintfolkmusic.org has concerts downtown on Saturday and a free folk music
festival in the summer every year. The concerts are around $12 but maybe you
could get a better rate.
www.backtothebricks.org Back to the Bricks is a big old car show. It is free
inthe summer in flint. and if folks asked ahead of time or/and took gloves
with them, some folks with the cars may let the blind touch them. I have
touched a few. There is music and other activities. You CAN ALSO cruise and
stop at different businesses along the way for treats or discounts. It is
quite crowded.
The Alma Highland Festival is really fun. That would maybe be a day trip.
There are bagpipes, vendors with arts and crafts, lots of walking, you can
stay in the dorm or a motel or probably camp.It is at Alma College. They
also have these border collies that retrieve sheep, and these special
cows. I have been there for the day and also over night.
I like to go to Crossroads village in the winter when the snow is real
deep. It just seems more like Christmas then.
Well, that is all I can think about things around here. The state parks are
fun in the summer and the hiking is challenging. The football team used to
go there for their summer training when I was in high school. Alma is really
fun and if you like challenging mobility--Back to the Bricks would be
good. The street is brick for a number of blocks. They do close down many
of the streets so you can walk on the sidewalk or in the street. We have
some historical churches and perhaps there could be some tours arranged.
If the committee is interested, we can talk more. I am pretty good with
pr. Someone from AVBC 12 goes to our church.I know a few people in a couple
of the car clubs.
Best,
Georgia

I can think of a lot of fun things to do, but they all sound expensive. It
would be fun to go to Cedar Point, or an indoor water park. I would love to
help any youth that were interested with their Braille.
