Subject: tip of iceberg in michigan

This is from the United States Department of Justice ADA, Title II technical assistance manual.
In my brief survey most of the required signs were either:
-non tactile in any manner like the one mention
-did not have raised character elements like the ones on the third floor which were recessed not raised though they did have Braille
-were improperly mounted (ie on the door) like on the BEP snack bar
-or didn't have braille like the restrooms on the first floor which also did not have raised characters...
Note the ADA requires that paths of travel have accessable signage and it is important in wayfinding. The point is that the handful of compliant signage
doesn't cut muster and Pat should know that because he was chair of the US Access Board which developed the ADAAG design and placement standards.
I'm working to get the media involved in this as the system is corrupted and DOJ and others just don't enforce the law.

ADAAG:

* Signs designating permanent rooms and spaces (men's and women's rooms; room numbers; exit signs) must have raised and Brailled letters; must comply with

finish and contrast standards; and must be mounted at a certain height and location (§4.1.3(16)(a)).

* Signs that provide direction to or information about functional spaces of a building (e.g. "cafeteria this way;" "copy room") need not comply with requirements

for raised and Brailled letters, but they must comply with requirements for character proportion, finish, and contrast. If suspended or projected overhead,

they must also comply with character height requirements (§4.1.3(16)(b)).

* Building directories and other signs providing temporary information (such as current occupant's name) do not have to comply with any ADAAG requirements

(§4.1.3(16)).
