Hi Elizabeth,

I just reread your comments. I saw no harsh words or language. You did a
fine job. I think the Commission will be way wrong to adopt this policy.

Thank you for following this topic so closely.

Warm Regards,

Fred

Subject: [nfbmi-talk] A Closer Look at the College Policy

Hello List,

Please accept my apologies for the harsh message I sent to the list last
night. I was a bit upset about a few things last night, and I used the
message I sent last night as a way to vent some of my current frustrations.
However, upon closer inspection of the current proposed college policy, I
honestly do not think we have anything to worry about in terms of the
upcoming MCB Board meeting because the policy contradicts itself on one of
the major issues surrounding the policy.

In the main policy statement under financial aid, it states that the MCB
cannot contribute more then the family contribution as stated on the FAFSA
report. However, in one of the procedure statements, the policy states that
counselors will help students find alternative ways to pay for the family
contribution as indicated by the FAFSA report. Now I don't know about you,
but why would a counselor have to help someone pay for the family
contribution as stated on the FAFSA report if the Commission is already
required to pay the family contribution as indicated on the FAFSA report? In
other words, why would a student even need to worry about finding a way to
pay this contribution when apparently this contribution is already being
paid for by the Commission? I will post the exact wording from the policy
below, but I honestly don't think the Commission Board would approve a
policy that only serves to contradict itself.

Elizabeth

D. Financial Aid

For a student determined eligible for MCB postsecondary financial
sponsorship, financial support for college and other postsecondary training
will be provided only after all other financial resources and comparable
benefits have been exhausted. MCB is required to follow RSA requirements by
not providing financial support beyond expected family contribution on the
FAFSA.

Procedure:

. MCB counselors will work with college students to explore other financial
resources, when necessary, if the student is unable to meet the financial
responsibility indicated on the FAFSA for expected family contribution.
