August Charles Weir "Charlie"
Lansing
Born Aug. 29, 1928 in Detroit, son of Gus and Louise (Bonten) Weir, passed
away,
Sunday, August 14, 2011 in Lansing at age 82. Charlie graduated from South
Lake High
School, St. Clair Shores and immediately entered the U.S. Marines. After
being honorably
discharged he attended and graduated from Eastern Michigan University. Later
he earned
his Masters Degree from MSU. In his professional life he served the Michigan
School
for the Blind (MSB), retiring as Acting Superintendent in 1984. While at MSB
he was
involved with the 1963 MSB state champion wrestling team. He was a well
respected
basketball and football official
at the high school and MIAA college level. Upon retiring, Charlie was
involved in
the Bretton Woods Lions Club, where he held several offices including
president. He continued to serve as District Governor and Council Chair for
District
11-C-2 and as an International Director for Lions International. He
served on numerous state and local Lions committees and helped establish the
Michigan
Eye Bank, Bear Lake Camp and the Lions of Michigan Service Foundation.
He was active in the Leader Dog program. He was a faithful member for 54
years of
Holy Cross Catholic Church until its closing. He then transferred to
St. Gerard Catholic Church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus,
Richard Council,
#788. He freely gave of his time and talents to those in need,
throughout his life. He was a good friend to the "Mooser's" and was always
supportive
of his grandchildrens' activities. He is preceded in death by his
parents, a daughter, Debbie and a son Steve. Surviving is his wife Fran, of
nearly
60 years, 3 children: Brad (Becky), Scott and Marilou (Tom) Gulick,
a daughter in law, Donna (Nick) Moseley, 9 grandchildren, 1 great grandson,
a brother
Robert and 2 nieces. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday at
10:30AM at St. Gerard Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. John Klein as celebrant.
Rite
of committal will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Visitation
is Wednesday 6-8PM and Thursday 2-4 & 6-8PM at the Palmer Bush & Jensen
Family Funeral
Homes, Delta Chapel, 6020 W. Saginaw where the Vigil will be prayed
Thursday at 7:00PM. Visitation continues Friday at 9:30AM at the church.

can be made to Lions of Michigan Service Foundation or the Michigan Eye Bank
in memory
of Charlie. Condolences can be made at
