Hi Joe and all:

When I spoke to Rachael the other day, she indicated to me that the reason
that they can't take the resumes in a word file is because they've had
viruses by having them come in that way.

I guess my question to them would be then, if I don't have a way of sending
it by way of fax, can I mail one to them? I think that would be reasonable.
I realize that there are blind people out there that don't have the latest
and greatest updated equipment. I am fortunate tto have the ability of
sending and receiving faxes and was able to send them a cover letter and
resume.

But I would ask them that question about sending a hard copy to
them.-----Original Message-----

Dear J.J. and All,

My point was not that technically it is not duable, but rather, a .pdf, or
print, faxed version of a resume can be problematic for blind folks who do
not have access to all the latest and greatest in technology. It also goes
to the fact that creating say a .pdf file has noting to do with the
essential functions of the jobs at issue.

Regardless a well put together Word document should not be an issue for them
at Leader Dog.

What is troubling to me is this appears to have a prejudice of visual form
over substance at its core.

It might seem subtle, and even trite, but it is very typical.

For what these potential employers aresaying is they want visually pleasing
resumes and value that over the real substance of one's abilities in a given
feild.

Shifting gears however it does go to show that we, who are blind desperately
need advanced technical training in all the latest and greatest to be
competative.

We, for the most part including myself are not so. And we for the most part,
including myself cannot afford to keep up. I am living with a six year old
computer with Jaws 6.2, for example and cannot afford to upgrade right now.
I will be getting an I-phone as soon as Verizon gets the new one in, perhaps
on December 9.

Anyway, one thing exciting is that the MCB TC will be upgrading its tech
component and we should all be able to access that component being critical
for not only employment prospects but even independent living in the 21st
century.

Joe
