Hi Phyllis,

you have some good ideas and I would like to talk more with you.

NFBNewsline volunteering would give you the opportunity to talk to folks
personally. There is nothing like the personal touch. We will have to talk
more on the phone.

One of the problems plaguing the field of blindness is reaching folks in a
timely way. This medical doctor that developed MD when elderly did a study
and it was published many years ago when I first started working with the
blind--when I actually went to work.
Anyway, it said that it took 7 years for folks to find out about services
for the blind. I talked to one man and he said it took him around 11 years.
Thatis one of the many good things about the NFb, folks meet other folks,
work on projects in the community and learn from each other and from those
presenting at convention etc. Believe it or not, some people won't use a
straight cane. I never did when I could see somewhat for the longest time
until I fell and that did it. I got a straight long cane about 8 inches
taller than the short folding one. Yes, I have 2 telescoping canes but they
are used only in certain situations. I also fell under a train before I
started using a long cane. I was lucky I did not get hurt.
My reader is here from 9 to noon. She is only 17. After lunch we can talk if
you are going to be around or when the time is good for you.

Larry Posont gives me a lot of freedom with regards to NFBNewsline so if I
don't spend money, I usually can go ahead with things.

Another thing about being disabled, some folks don't have children who will
or can help them. I talked to a woman yesterday and she had all the things
she needed thanks to her kids. Since people are spread all over, children in
the military, single parent families, unemployment that ideal situation is
rare.

2 of us sky dived in 2002 to promote NFBNewsline. This owner of a sky dive
company called saying he had called all over to blindness agencies trying to
locate 2 people to take free that were blind to promote his business. It
didn't take me long to say yes.

After 2 of us from the NFB sky dived, some folks from the training center
went. It would be cool if they took folks again. Too cold now though.
Best Regards,
Georgia
