Governor Rick Snyder has declared April 27 through May 6, as Michigan White Cane Week. This is a time when many local Lions Clubs will be asking for public

contributions to help the visually impaired in our area.

In the United States, approximately 750,000 people are blind and an additional 50,000 more will become blind each year, according to the National Federation

of the Blind. Over the past 10 years, the Kalamazoo Downtown Lions Club has provided more than $100,000 in eyeglasses assistance to more than 2,000 local

people in need. The Downtown Club has also provided free vision screening to thousands of preschool children through Project Kidsight.

All money collected by area Lions clubs stays in the community. Please continue to support the Lions clubs' efforts to improve the lives of the visually

impaired and protect the vision of our children.

DAVID R. DELEEUW, secretary, Downtown Kalamazoo Lions Club/Kalamazoo
