Auburn Hills is about 30 miles north of Detroit. As far as I know it is a really nice area.  census data says population is about 23,000.  Smartbus.org should give you info about transportation in cities located in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties.  kalamazoo is blind friendly. it is on the western side of the state. Perhaps that would be a good place to live.
