Michigan unveils plan to help disabled individuals enter the workforce

Rep. Dave Camp

Michigan state officials unveiled a strategic plan on Monday that would take steps to encourage individuals with disabilities to enter the workforce.

The report, which was called “Better Off Working: Disability Reform Work Group Strategic Plan,” identifies a number of administrative and legislative changes

at the local, state and federal levels that would eliminate hurdles, amend incentives, improve services and plug disabled individuals into the workforce.

Rep. Dave Camp (R-Mich.) applauded the Michigan Department of Human Services for its collaboration on the strategic plan with Michigan Rehabilitation Services,

Disability Determination Services, the Disability Network and Michigan employers.

“Its goal is the right one — to help more of our fellow citizens with disabilities share their talents and skills in the workplace,” Camp, the chairman

of the House Ways and Means Committee, said. “As the report outlines, that will require better coordinating government and private resources to promote

work by recognizing and supporting the skills those with disabilities bring to a job. Achieving such change isn’t easy, but as the report makes clear,

the benefits for people (with) disabilities — as well as the rest of our community — are profound. Again, this strategic plan is an excellent start, and

one that policymakers in Washington, D.C., Lansing and every other state capital should review closely.”

At the state level, the plan outlines employer navigation programs that would help locate, accommodate and retain employees who have disabilities. It also

details plans to educate disabled individuals about programs that could help them earn and save money.

At the federal level, the plan recommends increasing asset caps for individuals who receive essential benefits, bringing uniformity to administrative law

and eliminating double dipping by offsetting unemployment benefits if an individual also receives disability payments.
