Hello Kathy, I agree with you and with times as they are if a blind person wants to carry a gun it is important that we follow the law.

Cathy:

I agree with you completely. However, it depends upon how one interprets the Second Amendment whether gun rights are civil rights.

Hello All,

The concealed weapons issue was one of the first pieces if legislation I had to deal with as a new president. A blind lady got caught with her gun in her purse when she went through security in a downtown building. As you can imagine the media had a field day. This was the topic of conversation on several local radio talk shows. It did give NFB a forum to discuss blindness though. There was a state legislature who wanted to add a visual acuity requirement to prevent blind people from even having the opportunity to apply for a conceal cary permit. We would not let them single us out. We told them We didn't have a problem strengthening the law, but they would have to do it across the board. For once the majority of the members in the state house agreed with us and legislation was not introduced. I am a firm believer that blind people must meet all of the same requirements and pass the test at the shooting range without special assistance. It is a matter of civil rights. I do agree we have other issues that we should be more concerned with. But, this is a perfect example of just how important it is for us to keep our eyes and ears open to what is going on around us.

Illinois has a new concealed carry law. I have received two calls on the topic of blind people who can't get permits. I am dropping a note to ask advice. I have referred these to Equip for Equality on the notion that carrying guns is not a priority for us. What are you all doing with these sorts of questions?
